1. In a PV solar cell, the current generated is proportional to the intensity of the light. A particular PV cell is connected to a monitoring station circuit; the cell produces a current of 10 mA when the light intensity is 200 mW/cm².
The current from the PV cell flows through the circuit (of the monitoring station) which has an internal resistance of 4 ohm. What is the voltage drop (in volt) across this monitoring station, when the light intensity is 600 mW/cm²? Answer in volt.
2. For a given illumination, a solar photovoltaic cell produces an open-circuit emf of 0.46 volt. The cell is connected across a ‘load’ with resistance of 400 ohm. Assume that the emf across the solar cell is the same as the open-circuit value.
What heating power is generated in the resistor, in watt?
1. 10 mA at 200 W/cm² means 30 mA at 600 W/cm², since we’re told that the current is proportional to the intensity.
E = IR = (0.03 A)(4 Ω) = 0.12 V.
2. P = E²/R = (0.46 V)²/(400 Ω) = 5.3×10^-4 W = 0.53 mW.
