The need for solar energy as an alternative power source
We are all keenly aware of the fact that the global environment is not in the best of shape. Additionally, global warming is becoming an increasing problem as well so the need for employing renewable and sustainable energy for electricity is growing every day. To say that solar power provides us with numerous advantages would be an understatement. The fact that it is good for the environment and non-polluting is paramount, but there are some disadvantages that people need to be aware of.
Cost disadvantages
For the most part, the cost of building and installing a solar energy array is usually the biggest deterrent to using this source of power. The initial investment can be a large outlay and has always been the primary solar energy disadvantage. However, there are a lot of things that can be done to help reduce those costs. Oftentimes, it will cost you more to build and install a solar power system compared to installing other technologies which employ fossil fuels. So cost becomes the biggest consideration at the outset.
Area and location disadvantages
On a positive note, there are few places on earth where solar energy is not a viable option, but the key to this part of the solar energy equation is area and location. It takes a lot of space to set up a solar energy array and certain geographical features can hinder the amount of heat and light that is captured from the sun. The lay of the landscape, structures, and trees become critical issues when you are installing a solar power array. Solar panels are rather large and cumbersome, so a large unobstructed area around the home is required in order to accommodate your solar energy array.
The aesthetic disadvantages
Where the installation of a solar array on one’s roof is concerned, certain roofing materials will adapt better than others. Lots of homeowners are reluctant to spoil the looks of a beautiful tile roof and why shouldn’t they be? Let’s be realistic for a moment. Solar panels do very little to enhance the looks of a decorative roof. Currently, the aesthetic solar energy disadvantage is being addressed by utilizing PV (photovoltaic) that are more flexible and thinner. PV shingles are now being developed which blend in quite seamlessly with the existing roof.
The environmental disadvantages
If you live off-grid and have installed a solar energy array, then you are no doubt using deep cycle batteries containing lead acid, i.e. lead and sulfuric acid. So this is a solar power disadvantage to consider because it poses a threat to the air, soil, and the water of the immediate environment. Additionally, it is highly toxic to marine life and it is well known that lead poses a health threat to young children. On the other hand, there is good news in the fact that up to 98% of the materials found in lead batteries is recoverable and recyclable once they are considered “dead.”
