More and more people are turning to the power of the sun as fossil fuel generated electricity gets more expensive. How much does solar power cost to have installed in your home? Here’s the bad news- you will need to pay between $3000-$9000 to have a technician come to your place, assess your house then install the solar panel system and wire it up to your electricity circuit. Some countries (and states inside the USA) will offer rebates of varying amounts, usually depending on what your household income is. However, for most people the cost of professionally installed solar power is somewhat crippling. Many people are now opting to have it installed when building a new house- however, if the cost is tacked on to the mortgage then you will be paying interest for years to come, meaning that the cost could be between three to five times higher.
Why is solar power so expensive?
Even though the cost of PV (photovoltaic) systems and panels are decreasing at a rapid rate, due to a massive surge in demand from places such as Europe, supply is not able to keep up. This problem is only going to get worse before it gets better for those of you who are living in the USA, as manufacturers can get more for their product in Europe due to a strong Euro, and the sheer fact that the product commands a much higher price. Until supply catches up, the big decrease in the cost of solar technology is not going to be reflected for residential customers like you and I.
The only way around this is to build and install a solar power system yourself. Although this sounds like it would be virtually impossible to do safely and easily, that’s actually not true! Using a set of plans, instructions and blueprints, you can learn what components you need to purchase, how to assemble them correctly, how to install the system safely and easily, and how to wire it up so that you can either store the excess electricity you produce, or sell it back to your utility company so that they send you checks. Many people have done this for themselves, and the average total cost of the system (including downloadable instruction manual) is around $300, only a small fraction of what you would have to pay someone else to do exactly the same job as you can do yourself.
