pvd coating on watches

Watches…what are the downsides of PVD coating on a watch? Is it better than stainless steel?
I’m looking at a baume and mercier watch and it has both a stainless steel and a PVD steel option. The PVD is more expensive. Is it worth the extra money to get the PVD? It is a lighter material, but I also was told that it is far more prone to damage/breaking. Please let me know some good thoughts on this! It would be appreciated.
It does sound like the PVD coating would be better than stainless – tough, hard to scratch. What usually goes first on my watches is the crystal, not the case. The crystal gets scratched up before the case starts looking bad.
