How worried should we about about sunstorm in 2012?
Nasa released information saying we will have a major solar sunstorm in 2012. The news this morning said the disruptions from the storm will begin 2010 and last to 2012.
They are worried it will knock out satelights + cell phones. Also it will effect water supply, sewage, gas. This is scary.
My question is how will this sunstorm effect us?
Has anyone seen that new movie “Knowing”? It just happens to be about the whole human race destroyed by a Solar storm!

Yes we have minor solarstorms between the bigger solarstorms occuring ever 11 years. They are worried about this one, they think its going to knock out alot of our modern day technology.
Mr. Anderson, I actually did see that movie as well. It was very interesting but I think that one is more unlikely.
NASA is funded by the US government and ultimately by the US taxpayer, so they regularly issue press releases to keep themselves in the public eye. This one, which actually dates back to January, was one of their more sensationalistic efforts, and spins some thin facts into quite an elaborate scenario. Anyone who’s used to NASA press releases has learned to take these with a grain of salt. The Earth has survived many previous solar maxima (they come along every 11 years) so I doubt whether the next one will be any different. Certainly we are more dependent on satellite technology, but all satellite networks are designed with redundancy and solar activity in mind.
